Spies, Dovizioso identify corner exit problems with 2012 M1
Spies says the front end is sweet and so is the motor...
Factory Yamaha's Ben Spies and his Tech3 counterpart Andrea Dovizioso have sent their respective engineers away with a clear message and that is if the 2012 YZR-M1's corner exit problems get fixed, they have one hell of a MotoGP bike on their hands for next season.
Both Spies and Dovizioso, who rode his satellite machine for the first time on Tuesday, have identified that suspension pump and wheelies are issues for the bike but there are no such worries with the front end. Spies went on to say there are only a few small problems to iron out before the 1000c-powered version of the M1 becomes a competitive package.
"We have a lot to improve. There is nothing bad with the bike, there are lots of little things we need to improve and if we can do those it will add up to something big and a much better package in Malaysia so we need to refine what we have. Looking at the test now, we are closer (to Honda) than we were with the 800s, so we have a good starting point," said Spies, speaking to bikesportnews.com.
"With the 1000cc, wheelying is a big problem but we had that with the 800cc. The problem hasn't carried over as much as I thought but it looks like it's still a weakness and we need to improve some of the grip. The front of the bike is all great but the rear, we can mess with some swingarm components, linkages, engine power, a lot of things can contribute to why it is wheelying so much. I'm confident we can have a good bike for next year, we just need to make what we have better."
Yamaha rookie Dovizioso, who claimed third in the series last Sunday, had a lengthy meeting with all of Yamahas engineers after his second day on the bike and said that his main problem was the amount of suspension pump he was encountering as he got on the power out of corners.
"I have a really good feeling about brake stability, corner entry, the engine is so good but we struggle a lot on exit in acceleration. We have a lot of pump and wheelie. I think we have a lot of work to do but the base of the bike is very good," said Dovizioso after his debrief.
"I have a different style than Cal and Ben, and the style for me is to try and pick up the bike so mainly it is the pumping but also the wheelie. I lose a lot in acceleration so I couldn't make a really good laptime."
