Repsol Honda's Dani Pedrosa has continued his form from yesterday at the Valencia MotoGP test and set the fastest time of the final day with a 1'31.807 which was over a tenth quicker than team-mate Casey Stoner with Yamaha's Ben Spies third.

Pedrosa was only a gnat's off Stoner's qualifying time of 1'31.861 but with a while season's development to come, and the new Bridgestone tyres which were used in part today, Valentino Rossi's outright lap record of 1'31.002 set in 2006 on Michelins, must be a realistic target now.

As with yesterday, Stoner had been in charge since the start and Pedrosa left it until right to the end to stick in his banker lap. Spies, meanwhile, occupied third place with his 1'32.338 which was miles faster than he managed in qualifying on Saturday on the 800.

The American was shadowed by the Monster Yamaha pair of Cal Crutchlow and Andrea Dovizioso. Crutchlow bagged fourth with a 1'32.550 (he qualified on a 1'34.329) while his new team-mate managed a 1'33.256 which was half a second up on his lap from Saturday.

It was not good news again for Valentino Rossi and the Marlboro Ducati team. The Doctor is 1.5s slower than Pedrosa and if the gap stays like this at the Sepang test, it is going to be a long 2012. We suspect that Rossi will take no solace from the fact he was the fastest Ducati in sixth - Karel Abraham and Hector Barbera are right behind him and only tenths slower.

San Carlo Honda new-boy Alvaro Bautista was the fastest of the 800s as he lapped in 1'33.814 on the ex-Hiro Aoyama machine. The Spaniard signed for the team yesterday and rode in plain leathers, and managed to keep Stefan Bradl behind him. The new Moto2 Champion was on the LCR Honda and, with a 1'34.142 lap which would have put him ninth on the grid, may well remain on it for next year.

Just hours after leaving the Rizla Suzuki MotoGP team, Alvaro Bautista is now lapping Valencia aboard the ex-Hiro Aoyama Gresini Honda RC212V and has just done a 1'33.8s lap. The Spaniard will replace Marco Simoncelli in the team but it is doubtful he will have the same HRC backing as the late Italian.

Team boss Fausto Gresini said: "I’m particularly satisfied that Álvaro Bautista will ride a Honda RC213V in the San Carlo Honda Gresini team colours next year. He is a very fast rider and I hold him in high regard for his personality and pleasant nature too. I am sure he will integrate into our group swiftly and that we will enjoy some notable experiences together in the future.”

Busy second day at Valencia Test

Valencia Test Wednesday early

The Official MotoGP Test commenced its second and final day at the Spanish track, with plenty of action and a high-profile signing confirmed for 2012.

Day two of the Official MotoGP Test at Valencia got underway on Wednesday and by 2pm local time there had been a flurry of activity both on and off the track.

Confirmation came during the morning that Álvaro Bautista had signed a contract with the San Carlo Honda Gresini team for 2012, and the Spaniard and his new crew wasted little time getting to work as he rode 32 laps on the RC212V, getting accustomed to the 2011 Honda.

Elsewhere, Dani Pedrosa and Casey Stoner led the way in terms of lap times, the duo both getting down into the 1’31” band. Stoner is testing a new Bridgestone tyre and seeking a solution to the chatter issue he has encountered on the RC213V.

Yamaha Factory Racing rider Ben Spies is working on engine geometry and electronics on the 2012 M1 and was within a second of Pedrosa’s top time from the first half of the day, with Monster Yamaha Tech 3 pair Cal Crutchlow and Andrea Dovizioso both riding the new bike too – the Italian compared the 800cc and more powerful evolution on Tuesday but is today (Wednesday) concentrating solely on the 2012 version.

In the absence of the injured Nicky Hayden, Valentino Rossi continues to work on the experimental GP12 chassis as he and Test rider Franco Battaini gather further data. Battaini is focusing on electronics.

The CRT bikes of Inmotec (Iván Silva), Team Laglisse (Carmelo Morales) and Gapam (Federico Sandi) are also again on track, with Moto2 rider Yonny Hernández also lapping on an FTR/Kawasaki machine.
